A possible tornado hit the city of Elmira in New York’s Southern Tier on Thursday, reportedly causing damage.
The Associated Press reports:
Emergency officials say a tornado touched down in the city of Elmira and there are reports of several buildings damaged. Chemung County emergency officials say tornado touched down after 4 p.m. in the Southern Tier city. They were assessing the situation and did not know if there were any injuries. The National Weather Service issued its first tornado warning at 3:35 p.m. and have received reports of fallen trees and siding damage. The storm system was heading east.
According to the National Weather Service, there are reports of damage at Arnot Mall and the Elmira Country Club, with people reportedly trapped in vehicles.
Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported earlier:
“The risk for widespread damaging winds will increase from midday to mid-afternoon from Indiana and Ohio across Pennsylvania, southeast New York, into western Massachusetts and Connecticut,” the U.S. Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, said in a severe weather outlook.
