Monticello, NY – The Town of Thompson became the fourth municipality on Tuesday to reject the proposed “Sullivan County Police Commission”. The five member board, consisting of three democrats and two republicans voted unanimously.
Thompson’s resolution follows the towns of Bethel and Mamakating, along with the Village of Liberty who have also rejected the plan. While other towns consider similar actions, the Sullivan County Association of Town Supervisors is also preparing a resolution to condemn the proposal.
While police commissions are common with municipal police forces where police chiefs are appointed by town and village boards, in New York State, the Sheriff is an elected office.
Sources are telling CatskillScoop.com that the plan to form a police commission by the newly elected county legislators is strictly political and timed to precede the 2013 election for Sheriff.
