A three-month construction project is expected to create major backups for New Jersey drivers crossing the George Washington Bridge.
The project on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge on the New York side starts on Saturday. The Alexander Hamilton is the main thoroughfare for eastbound drivers crossing the GWB and getting to I-95 in the Bronx.
Traffic could back up for miles into New Jersey.
The project will not affect motorists using the GWB from New York to New Jersey.
New Jersey drivers are advised to use the three Staten Island crossing. Motorists from the north are advised to use the Tappan Zee Bridge.
Signs about the construction project were posted near the bridge in New Jersey.
The work on the Alexander Hamilton involves steel reinforcement and deck replacement.

Does this affect traffic merging from the Palisades Parkway on to the GWB?
Anyone out there know?
“New Jersey drivers are advised to use the three Staten Island crossing.”
How could they give such advice? It depends on where you’re going in NY! If Brooklyn, I understand, but if you’re headed to midtown, why go to Staten Island? Take the Lincoln or Holland tunnels!
Goisher Kup, they always do this work in the summer when you have the most traffic.
Alter Zaidy, with all due respect, maybe it’s because there’s less rain and snow in the summer.
