Delta Flight Returns To JFK After Security Scare


A Delta flight headed to Madrid returned to JFK after takeoff Thursday night after suspicious wires were noticed on board by Federal Air Marshals. No device was found on the aircraft.

The plane took off just after 8pm and landed back at JFK at around 9:40pm. Police searched the aircraft but according to ABC what was discovered were two pieces of a drinking straw about an inch and a half long with wires running through each.

No explosive was present.

Authorities involved in the investigation say that while they still had not determined why the straws and wires were placed in the lavatory, it did not appear to even rise to the level of a hoax device. something made to look like a bomb, but with no explosive present.
The plane stopped on the taxiway and the passengers were evacuated.

Nobody was taken into custody in the incident.

Passengers will be rebooked on flights.

  1. One passenger was in custody, possibly because the Air Marshal believed she was feigning an illness. According to news reports she was escorted by police to a nearby medical facility.
