Two teenagers were arrested and charged for the gunpoint carjacking of a 64-year-old man in Baltimore on Sunday night.
Baltimore Shomrim received a call around 11 p.m. on Sunday, about 4 teenagers seen trespassing on a neighbors’ property. About five or six Shomrim members responded and began to watch the teens as they walked in the direction of Reisterstown Road.
Shomrim units then witnessed the group perpetrate a car-jacking. They pulled open the front door of a white van in the 6200 block of Pearce Avenue, and forced the man out at gunpoint.
At least one Shomrim member went to check on the victim, a 64-year-old man from the community who was rattled but uninjured. Others followed the suspects who initially sped off in the van, but eventually ditched it and began to run. Shomrim relayed the information and location of the suspects to the Baltimore City Police, who arrived on the scene to arrest the suspects.
Two teens were charged in the incident. Mikayal Hendris, 16, is charged with robbery and theft. He was being charged as an adult.
A second juvenile suspect, a 15-year-old boy, was taken to Juvenile Booking and Intake Facility. He was not named because he is not being charged as an adult.
Baltimore Police praised Shomrim’s efforts in this incident. “Several members of the community saw this occur, and those individuals not only did they call police, but they also began to follow the vehicle and they were able to relay this information to officers,” Baltimore police Detective Jeremy Silbert said.
Shomrim says the area has seen five carjackings in the past six weeks. They urge the community to be cautious and aware of their surroundings and share any information.
