Should we provide them with basic healthcare, food and clothing? More? Less?
July 11, 2017 12:52 am at 12:52 am #1315036Avi KParticipantIdeally we should provide them with jobs. Government should deregulate the economy, establish a stable currency and protect property rights in order to encourage entrepreneurs and investors. If someone cannot work or is temporary in a fix he should be helped by civil society. If it is too much he should be helped by the most local level of government as possible as they are better able to provide him with a solution that is appropriate for him.
As for what we should give him, unless he demonstrates that he does not know how to handle money he should be given money and allowed to make his own decisions.

July 12, 2017 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #1316957👑RebYidd23ParticipantWhat about those who work full time?
July 12, 2017 10:52 pm at 10:52 pm #1316965jakobParticipantif they are already working full time & are still tight on their budget then they need to changed their spoiled life of this generation & live with the motto of “GET WHAT YOU NEED NOT WHAT YOU WANT”
so many people approach me for budgeting advice on how to get back on track telling me they have 3 cars & go on 3 vacations a year, is there any reason i should be surprised that they are now almost penniless? dont we all know that food clothing & tuition comes before vacations? etc…..
sit down today with your spouse & make a list of all the EXTRAS in your life & home (anything that is not a real necessity i,e. restaurants, fancy peer pressure clothing with fancy family simchas etc….)
HATZLACHA
Your life will change to such a happy life instead of poor, by being happy with your lot as it says in pirkei avos
July 12, 2017 11:57 pm at 11:57 pm #1316977👑RebYidd23ParticipantJakob, so true. I’ll tell my neighbor to stop being so spoiled and insisting on those chemo treatments.

See the 1st mishna in Peah, the Rav, the shulchan aruch and speak with your personal posek for your particular situation.
July 18, 2017 1:39 pm at 1:39 pm #1320274kitovParticipantWe should help the poor as much as we would want to be helped if we would be poor.
July 18, 2017 2:02 pm at 2:02 pm #1320433Avi KParticipantKitov, that is a form of “lifnei iver”. Who says that what is right for Reuven is right for Shimon?
July 18, 2017 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm #1320517👑RebYidd23ParticipantBut if we keep supporting poor people they will think it’s okay to be poor.
September 13, 2017 10:53 pm at 10:53 pm #1363296JJ2020ParticipantRebyid – isn’t that what they said in sedom? I think you’re supposed to give according to what the person is accustomed too. I also think considering what you would want for yourself is helpful. For example one may be tempted to say hey they could eat potatoes three times a day. Well i would hope if I was poor I’d be able to eat at least xyz.
September 14, 2017 2:07 am at 2:07 am #1363318👑RebYidd23ParticipantLittle trolling there.
September 14, 2017 9:22 am at 9:22 am #1363370lesschumrasParticipantJakob, you’re so right. I’ll tell that spoiled person to pull his kids from yeshiva and put them in public schoil. By saving 5 tuitions, he can replace that fancy 10 year old car
September 14, 2017 9:23 am at 9:23 am #1363358Avi KParticipantJJ, so if he wants a Rolls Royce he should give one to a poor person?
September 14, 2017 9:33 am at 9:33 am #1363376lesschumrasParticipantAren’t we raising a generation of poor, barely employable generation ny sending them to schools that barely, if at all, teach English, math and how to write?

It’s pretty ironic that you tried to vilify the Integrity of our secular studies by crafting a grammatically incorrect statement.September 14, 2017 10:01 am at 10:01 am #1363429JJ2020ParticipantAvik – if you were poor you would not expect others to buy you a RR. But if you needed a car to get to work perhaps a down payment on a used car.

“It’s pretty ironic that you tried to vilify the Integrity of our secular studies by crafting a grammatically incorrect statement.”Aderaba! IT proves his assertion (Im not much better, and dont get my started on my typing)
I think Craig T Nelson said it best (To Glenn Beck who seemed to agree) ” “I’ve been on food stamps and welfare, did anybody help me out? No. No.”
September 14, 2017 10:34 am at 10:34 am #1363468JJ2020ParticipantLesschumras – 20% of the US are on food stamps and I don’t think it’s bc they are all learning in yeshivah. Many have Masters and PhD. Hashem decides who will be poor and rich. It’s not for us to judge. If we have we should be great full to Hashem and give what we can bsimcha. It’s much better to be on the giving end then the receiving.
September 14, 2017 10:35 am at 10:35 am #1363421akupermaParticipant“Aren’t we raising a generation of poor, barely employable generation by sending them to schools that barely, if at all, teach English, math and how to write?” — Well, that is a problem with American schools (not just Jewish ones). At least in the frum schools they get a good introduction to language (learning a foreign language gives you a much better perspective on thiings such as grammar and syntax, I never understood what a direct object was until I learned about את) – most Americans are infamously monolingual. More importantly, our schools at least train students (without them realizing it, which is feature) to work independently or with a fellow student which is a very useful skill, unlike American kids who need to be “spoon fed” by the teacher and can’t learn otherwise.
September 14, 2017 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #1363632👑RebYidd23ParticipantThe American school system is designed to squash kids until they are dead inside and can’t learn on their own so that they stay in the seats and listen to the teacher like objects in a factory.
September 14, 2017 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1363649👑RebYidd23ParticipantThis idea that it is a big aveira to give even one penny more than needed to tzedaka (and that a poor person who spends tzedaka money on decent clothing, shoes, takeout, or car payments instead of potatoes only is some kind of criminal) is very disturbing, especially from a traditional Jewish point of view.
September 14, 2017 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #1363868lesschumrasParticipantYitzchokim, ok so i can’t type well on a phone. I give approximately 10% of my income annually to various tzedakas so i don’t advocate not giving.
Please dont justify the secular education by downgrading American schools. NYC schools are generally awful. However most suburban schools districts are excellent, including the one i libe in.
Leatning another language in yeshiva isn’t helpful if they are not learning English, math or writing.September 14, 2017 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm #1364002yitzchokmParticipantlesschumras
Okay, I’ll give you a pass in the first part. But what are you going off on about learning another language? Are you still hung up about the Yiddish issue? -
