Their Opponents Embitter The Lives Of Chareidi Soldiers

The lives of the officers and chareidi soldiers have become difficult in the last year, especially the officers in the units responsible for the recruitment. Brigadier-General Eran Shani spoke harshly against the phenomenon during a meeting of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Shani, the head of the Planning & Personnel Directorate, under whose command the Meitav unit, which is responsible for recruitment centers and all candidates for IDF service, first addressed the grave incident in which an envelope was sent with a fake explosive to the Ramat Beit Shemesh home of the person responsible for yeshiva students in the IDF, “Major Rabbi Yaakov Roshi, head of the yeshiva students’ section, was summoned in the middle of the day by his wife as a result of an envelope that was sent to a mailbox – an explosive envelope.”

The senior office explained the incident with the envelope to committee members, citing there were small children at home and police were summoned, the area closed down and the building evacuated. He added that less than two weeks earlier, another member of his office, a civilian IDF employee, had an incident occur at this home. There was no envelope but when he opened his door, he was met by pashkavilim outside his home against both him and his wife. “They are embittering the lives of these people” explained Shani.

A Jerusalem police official present told committee members that the investigations are taken with the utmost seriousness, but told committee members he could not provide details.

Shani also told committee members that to date, 600 chareidi soldiers have been given permission to travel to and from their homes in civilian clothing, adding the IDF does not want to make this a standing order since the military is proud of the uniform. However, on the other side, the military is aware of the need for the special dispensation when the situation so compels.

  1. One day one of the armed soldiers or a family member will be physically threatened. When the person(s) doing the threatening will die of acute lead toxicity, maybe then, oh just maybe, they will learn to leave these soldiers doing their holy duty alone.

  2. I’ve said repeatedly, the rules of engagement in the event of assaults by Chareidi extremists should be the same as for assaults by Palestinian extremists–fire at will. As cowdc so elegantly stated, a few cases of “lead poisoning” will sadly be required before these yiddeshe terrorists learn their lesson.

  3. cowdoc, what you are suggesting is simply impossible. The holy soldiers performing their holy duties are always occupying themselves with Torah and learning mussar. They couldn’t possibly c”v discharge a lead pellet into a fellow Yid out of anger or frustration. They are beyond such pettiness. How could you think such thoughts about our holy soldiers?

  4. The Gadol Hador of the Yeshiva World persistently and chronically calls for violence against other yidden. Yidden whose only “crime” is that they wish to remain free of influences that they consider detrimental to their spiritual progress. And the Gadol, sitting comfortably in the U.S. feels authorized to openly call for having them murdered. Something that is completely against Torah law.
While not passing judgement on the name-calling (“Chardak,” etc.; and a bit more serious in the case reported here), it’s just that: name-calling. THAT is terrorism on a par with Arab terrorism? People with an unfortunately proven track record of murdering Yidden for the past hundred years. And BTW, even then, FYI, soldiers are not allowed to just walk into a situation and open fire, unless c”v there is a clear and present danger to their lives. There are commanding officers in charge, there is a chain of command, and so on. The Gadol is simply advocating, for the umpteenth time, lynch mob justice, “shoot first — ask questions later.” No arrest, no trial, nothing. Gadol, it’s called anarchy. It also means you are stooping even lower than level of those whose behavior you oppose. And YWN as a matter of course, publishes these kinds of comments that are an open incitement to murder. Other commenters have been edited and deleted for MUCH less.

  5. no, ywn is very smart they let through comments that are so outrageous so as to totally delegitimize gh and similar positions. If chareidim would fight from a less extreme angle arguing for freedom for all they may also gain legitimacy.

  6. When people think they must force their viewpoint on everyone else we end up with more machlokes. The majority is often wrong. Finding the truth requires respecting everyone with healthy debate. This is how we will create national harmony.

  7. Actually, YWN allows all comments because they realize that comments on a website are not serious, thought out opinions, myself included, but rather ramblings of news consumers. Let’s not take ourselves too seriously.

  8. So, if the medina and the IDF want to force their viewpoint on the Chareidim — that’s not causing more machlokes, and that’s OK. But, if the Chareidim wish to keep unwanted elements and ideologies out of their neighborhoods — THAT’S outrageously “forcing their viewpoint on everyone else.” Sounds a little skewed, wouldn’t you say?
And to those of you who continue to advocate lynch mob justice and “taking the law into their own hands” — you are giving legitimacy to the Chareidim whom you accuse of doing the same thing! Are you then saying that anarchy is OK for the IDF, but not permitted for the Chareidim?!?
I often wish all the arm-chair zionists and “eizteh-gebbers” in the U.S. would work on solving their own local issues, and stop passing judgement and giving advice on Eretz Yisrael matters that they probably don’t fully understand.

  9. Wolfman, so the arab terrorists — which is murder and mayhem for real — that part is meant in all seriousness. But, comparing Chareidim to these arab terrorists — who should also get a bullet and “suffer lead poisoning” — that’s just Purim Torah. And therefore, such comments, that are made in jolly good fun, should be allowed to continue.
Now, let’s see if YWN will allow comments that call for administering lead poisoning to secular Jews or IDF Chareidi-recruiters (“yeshiva bochur snatchers”). After all, it’s all tongue in cheek anyway.
