The plan for the supply of alternative ammonia to the Israeli economy was approved Monday 9 Tammuz by the cabinet to replace the ammonia tank, which has been in the Haifa Bay for more than 30 years. According to the plan, the latter will be closed by the end of 2017.
Instead, a ship with a reduced amount of ammonia will be installed at the shores of the Gulf.
Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav responded with a conversation with Reno Tzror of Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) about the plan that was approved.
“I feel deep pain,” Yahav said, accusing the government of endangering the city’s residents. “What the government is doing casually is to convert a protected tank into a ship that is not completely protected, and a population of one million residents is exposed to a large, ongoing danger,” he warned.
According to him, the government’s decision contradicts the court’s ruling. “The entry of the ship into Haifa port contradicts the decision of Justice Meltzer in the ruling of the Supreme Court.”
