A measure approved Friday in a New Jersey Assembly committee requires parents and teens to attend a driver’s education class if the child is to obtain a license.

The measure is now up for a full Assembly vote and, if passed, will then head to the state Senate.

The ordinance would not only require young drivers to have a learner’s permit for a year, but also to log 50 practice hours in addition to the parent-teen driving class.

The proposed measure is just the latest addition to a string of tougher teen driver regulations in the state, which already includes a graduated driver’s license program.

North Jersey AAA spokesperson Catherin Lewis said the measure would help both teens and parents alike.

Parents “could better be equipped to teach their teens how to drive, give them the right tools so that they’re putting their teens on a roadway to life-long safe driving,” Lewis said.

Lewis said she believes that the program would also allow for parents to better learn the rules of the graduated driver’s license program, leading to better enforcement of the rules.

Governor Chris Christie pocket vetoed a similar measure in January, but Assembly members are hopeful the governor will review and pass the bill if it reaches his desk again.
