The Satmar village of Kiryas Joel trying to extend its boundaries has reached an agreement with a group of local opponents that could bring expansion a step closer.
Leaders of Kiryas Joel and United Monroe told the Times Herald-Record of Middletown that the proposed settlement includes mutual support for the formation of a town that would separate the village from the Town of Monroe.
Kiryas Joel proposed converting into a larger, stand-alone town as a way to grow. United Monroe members feared expansion would result in more tightly-packed style development in this suburban area about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of New York City.
Neither side would release any details of the agreement.
Any new town proposal would require approval from county lawmakers and from Monroe town voters.
