Do you remember how you could call that number from your landline phone to hear the exact time?
Did people do that before Shabbat to make sure they lit punctually?
Does anyone still do that?
Is it the same exact time, to the second, as your cell’s time?
How would it know your location if you didn’t call from a landline?
Thanks! ๐
June 6, 2017 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #1290936JosephParticipant976-1616? Or was that the weather. Now you can go to time dot gov.
June 6, 2017 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #1290937JosephParticipantIt only gave the minute and seconds, not the hour.
June 7, 2017 12:04 am at 12:04 am #1290985DovidBTParticipantThere are a few time zones that are 30 minutes offset from the other zones.
The number I used to use gave the date/time in GMT.
June 7, 2017 12:14 am at 12:14 am #1291000JosephParticipantI think it used to cost 35 cents per call to the time or weather (or other 976 number.)
June 7, 2017 12:40 am at 12:40 am #1291014yehudayonaParticipantDovidBT, I don’t think people called from Iran to find out the time. Actually, there’s one area in North America that uses a time zone that’s not a whole number of hours offset from UTC.
June 7, 2017 12:43 am at 12:43 am #1291025LightbriteParticipantI remember it being a 100% free public service.
If it cost money then my parents would have said something and/or told me to stop calling.
I think I’ve called the weather one before, if that existed.
Brb! I want to see if the weather one is real and still exists. โ๐ง๐โโกโ ๐โ
June 7, 2017 12:52 am at 12:52 am #1291029LightbriteParticipantThanks Joseph!! I just listened to the weather. The automated guy even told me about the knots โบ
June 7, 2017 12:52 am at 12:52 am #1291030LightbriteParticipantOMGOSH!!! The time still exists!!! ๐๐๐๐๐

June 7, 2017 1:23 am at 1:23 am #1291041JosephParticipantWhat’s the weather like tomorrow?
June 7, 2017 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #1291669LightbriteParticipantJoseph the weather is so moody today! Last night it sounded like a gust here and a shower there with this many knots. The automated guy went on and on in a monotonous voice and I simply had enough, so I hung up. Oh no, I didn’t even think about it until right now, but I didn’t even say goodbye, or thank you! I hope he forgives me.
Anyway, do you want to switch weather forecasts? I’d like to trade in the next week for the opposite of what RebYidd23 wants.
Thanks ๐
June 7, 2017 11:30 pm at 11:30 pm #1291726JosephParticipantHow about my giving you New York weather for receiving San Francisco weather?
June 8, 2017 8:45 am at 8:45 am #1291816LightbriteParticipantI’ll see what I can do! ๐
June 8, 2017 8:56 am at 8:56 am #1291819–ParticipantNIST still maintains their Telephone Time-of-Day Service at (303)499-7111 and their Hawaii service at (808)335-4363 . Both my computer and phone were accurate to within 1 second on their default settings.
They also play a 440Hz signal 23 times a day so it’s useful for instrument tuning but to get the best signal you need a non-VOIP POTS line.
What happened to my signature line?
