State: Debris From NYPD Firing Range Dumped In Upstate Yard

Four truck drivers have been charged with illegally dumping hazardous debris from a New York City police firing range in the yard of an upstate family seeking clean fill.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports state Department of Environmental Conservation enforcement officers made the arrests last week after watching the drivers dump their loads on a property in the Ulster County hamlet of Kerhonkson where a couple lives with their four young children.

The couple had advertised online for clean fill to give their kids more room to play. The first loads dumped in April were dirt, but subsequent deliveries included debris, such as steel rebar, sewerage pipes, sludge, tar and sheetrock.

DEC officials say some of the debris came from the New York Police Department’s outdoor firing range in the Bronx.
