Statement of Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill Regarding Police Officer Critically Injured in the 67th Precinct:
“Good morning. The following information I am going to provide to you is preliminary and subject to change.
Last night, at approximately 11:50 p.m. there were three 911 calls reporting shots fired at Tilden Avenue and East 53rd Street, in Brooklyn.
Six plain clothes police officers from the 67th precinct responded and exited their vehicles, speaking with several people who were attending a party at that location. The officers were able to quickly determine that the likely cause of the 911 calls for shots fired was fireworks.
At this time, Police Officer Dalsh Veve was across the street speaking to several occupants sitting inside of a black Honda sedan that was parked in front of a fire hydrant.
As three of the officers continued to speak to several people, the officers observed Police Officer Veve being dragged by the sedan west on Tilden Avenue. The vehicle continued to drive on Tilden, taking a right on East 53rd Street, dragging Police Officer Veve for two and a half blocks, before the officer became free and fell on the street. The vehicle continued for a short distance before it crashed and was abandoned on East 53rd Street between Snyder and Church Avenue.
Police Officer Veve was immediately transported by police officers to Kings County Hospital where he is in critical condition.
Shortly afterward, a 15-year-old suspect walked into Brookdale Hospital with a gunshot wound and is in serious condition. At this time, we believe that the suspect was in the vehicle that dragged Police Officer Veve. That vehicle was recently stolen on Long Island. It appears that Police Officer Veve was able to discharge his service weapon twice while being dragged. There are several persons of interest who we are currently interviewing.
The police officer is currently in critical condition here at Kings County Hospital. My thanks to the emergency room staff and doctors who have been ensuring our officer gets the best care possible.
Police Officer Veve is a 9-year veteran of the NYPD and is married with a two-year-old daughter.

The person in the auto panicked and fled. A very reasonable thing considering the police and their reputation for gunning down anyone they approach. Why did the officer not have enough common sense to let go of the vehicle and the frightened occupants?
