That is the real issue when you “Ban Technology” . Where do you draw the line. The Chofetz Chaim would learn by Candlight , even when electricity was an option. He also refused to let himself be taken a picture of (As did many gedolim of that era)
Do you ban Autos after all, they have computers in them. How about ATM Machines?
May 12, 2017 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm #1274843besalelParticipanti dont think we need to get so technical. this ban, presumably, is a reaction to pornography, news outlets and social media. while we can argue all day about the best way to combat the issues raised by technology we all recognize that there is an issue and this is how this yeshiva chose to deal with it.
May 12, 2017 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm #1274845☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲ParticipantDoes a potato peeler count as “technology” (even not in this specific context)?
May 12, 2017 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #1274848MenoParticipanttech·nol·o·gy
tekˈnäləjēmachinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge
May 12, 2017 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #1274856zahavasdadParticipantNext year there will be a fast train between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. it will make the trip in I think 30 mins. Should we ban people from riding that train?
Right now people in Brooklyn can take the Subway to Manhattan, Lots of Prizus there.
Also there are alot of strange people on the Subway between people dressed Prizusly to Subway Preachers. Should we ban riding the Subway?
May 12, 2017 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #1274855zahavasdadParticipantThe biggest distributor of Prizus and Kefira was the printing Press. The Hashkalah could never have spread without the printing Press

The Chofetz Chaim would learn by Candlight , even when electricity was an option.I never heard that before. Where’d you hear/see that?
May 12, 2017 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #1274851JosephParticipantWhy are you taking an internet “news” outlet at face value?
May 12, 2017 5:03 pm at 5:03 pm #1274870iacisrmmaParticipantR’ Moshe held that a potato peeler is a fancy knife. Do you consider forks, spoons, and knives as technology?00
May 12, 2017 6:06 pm at 6:06 pm #1274946☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantALL technology? Even potato peelers?
Only the ones with screens.
May 12, 2017 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #1274945GadolhadorahParticipantEvery society and religious group has their own “Luddites” who have spiritual and moral concerns with innovations and new technology. While many of us disagree with the decision of the Rosh Yeshiva, I doubt this policy will result in empty seats in the beis medrash since there are more bochurim seeking admission than can possibly be accommodated. Putting aside the obvious issue that those coming out of this yeshiva will lack basic skills for a parnassah,, many of the most exciting and original thoughts in the world of torah learning are only available on the internet so they are denying their students access to daas torah from the next generation of more computer friendly talmedei chachamim.
May 12, 2017 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #1274947apushatayidParticipantWhy this was reported as “news” is beyond me. The over reaction by some while not surprising, is also beyond me. Do you learn in ponovezh? Why do you care?
Thank you YWN for facilitating the badmouthing of a Yeshiva and it’s roshei Yeshiva. (perhaps this is why the Yeshiva is banning the “technology” all it does is facilitate leitsanus and the bad mouthing of others).
May 12, 2017 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm #1274949mw13Participant…and WI-Fi
May 12, 2017 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #1274953besalelParticipantZsdad: I am pretty sure the challenges posed by today’s technology far out-paces the challenges we have ever faced before. I, personally, do not think a ban is a good long-term solution but I am surprised by the manner in which you minimize the very real issue that the ban speaks to.
May 12, 2017 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #1274954☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPutting aside the obvious issue that those coming out of this yeshiva will lack basic skills for a parnassah
It’s pretty far-fetched to think that talmidim of Ponovezh will be seriously impaired in their ability to earn parnassah because computers aren’t allowed in the beis medrash.
many of the most exciting and original thoughts in the world of torah learning are only available on the internet
As someone who spends time both in the beis medrash and online, I can assure you that someone’s growth in learning is much better served by spending time on the classic seforim than online.

If we were to ban the printing press, that wouldn’t change.

Maskim. The spreading of motzi shem ra about Am Yisrael by websites that label themselves as Frum is probably the biggest problem with internet today. It also may well be one of the biggest problems facing Am Yisrael today. The Rabbanim whom I’ve spoken to so far about this issue are very upset about it.
That is why I (in conjunction with Gedolei Yisrael) am trying to do whatever we can to stop it.
May 13, 2017 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm #1274995chiefshmerelParticipantI wonder if anyone here is from Ponovezh, and breaking that rule……
May 13, 2017 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #1275006LightbriteParticipantShavua Tov LU 🙂 🙂 🙂
Question please: I love how you add Hebrish into your posts! So I’ve wondered this before and realized that maybe I can ask you… Why do you write “maskim” instead of “maskimah”? I wondered if maybe to be gender anonymous or neutral maybe. Or maybe this is what people say in a frum context when agreeing with each other? Wondering if it is your thing, or a common thing that I didn’t realize that women say too.
Thank you <3
May 13, 2017 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm #1275013LightbriteParticipantIf someone is Ponovezh, then would outing oneself in the CR count as lashon hara against oneself?
May 13, 2017 10:45 pm at 10:45 pm #1275017zahavasdadParticipantThere is a movement among some to “out frum” someone else.
While this will only apply to Ponevech, someone else will likely think “Hey this is a great idea” and it will spread and Ponevech will just be the first for a technology ban, but it wont be the last.
While some might fantasize about the days of Horse and Buggy and propane lights and fridges, It isnt going to happen
Computers are everywhere and cannot be avoided no matter how much you try to legislate it. By banning it, all you are doing is creating more sinners and causing people to get the stuff clandestinly, which is worse than what you are trying to solve

May 14, 2017 9:55 am at 9:55 am #1275302zahavasdadParticipantAnyone who says Wifi is internet is a perfect example of why this is misinformed. And Ive heard it elsewhere as well
Wifi does not mean internet. All Wifi is , is a wireless network connection. If you connect to the network and there is internet on it AND you have the encription password then you will have internet. So if you neighbor has Wifi and it goes into your house (and frequently is does especially in a place like Brooklyn) and you have wifi on your laptop, Unless you have the Wifi Password (or the neighbor has unencrptyped internet) it is useless to you or anyone else
May 14, 2017 10:47 am at 10:47 am #1275357☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWho said wifi is Internet?
May 14, 2017 10:47 am at 10:47 am #1275372LightbriteParticipantThanks Sadigurarebbe for the answer!!! ☺
May 14, 2017 11:35 am at 11:35 am #1275460zahavasdadParticipantI have been asked about computers without Wifi from people in Lakewood or they wanted the Wifi card removed
They didnt seem to understand wifi without internet is meaningless
May 14, 2017 11:43 am at 11:43 am #1275641MenoParticipantThey didnt seem to understand wifi without internet is meaningless
But if you have wifi it is much easier to access the internet
May 14, 2017 12:59 pm at 12:59 pm #1275655☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantRight. Nobody thinks wifi is synonymous with internet.
May 14, 2017 1:41 pm at 1:41 pm #1275667👑RebYidd23ParticipantHow can you not get technical when it comes to technology?
May 14, 2017 1:42 pm at 1:42 pm #1275672👑RebYidd23ParticipantForks, spoons and knives are less advanced machines, but they are still technology.
May 14, 2017 1:42 pm at 1:42 pm #1275669👑RebYidd23ParticipantIf we ban technology, I suppose so.
May 14, 2017 2:41 pm at 2:41 pm #1275688lebidik yankelParticipantFriends, the issue is not internet nor technology. It having computers in a beis medrash. Rav Gershon Edelstein feels that computers do not belong in a beis medrash. That’s all there is to it. (Yes, you can have one at home)
May 14, 2017 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #1275690☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhat about potato peelers? Can I bring potato peelers to the bais medrash?
May 14, 2017 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #1275716👑RebYidd23ParticipantHow do you learn without a potato peeler?
May 14, 2017 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #1275758ChaverParticipantLeibik yankel where did you hear that computers at home are okay? In the article it says that the Rabbonim want to distance the Talmidim from technology so they banned technology from the Yeshiva where the Talmidim are. That does not imply that when the Talmidim go home once a month or so they should have computers.
May 15, 2017 12:03 am at 12:03 am #1275825MDGParticipantThe GRA used to learn with a candle – even during the day – with the windows closed. That way he always has the same learning environment, which helps in reducing distractions.
