Retired IDF Brigadier-General Eli Ben-Meir is using Facebook to air his dirty laundry. The former second in command in IDF intelligence decided to pack it in, to retire due to irreconcilable differences with his commander, Chief of Military Intelligence Major-General Hertzi Halevy.
In his Facebook post, the former senior intelligence official writes “The roof of the house is leaking and I failed to correct it.”
Ben-Meir headed the research division of the Intelligence Corps. He explains that the Intelligence Corps was his second homes, serving for some 30 years, and despite his best efforts, he was unsuccessful in fixing the leaky roof.
Adding to his own credentials, he served in a number of other high-level intelligence posts including: the US intelligence attaché and chief intelligence officer. Following that post, he became head of the research unit back in 2015. It did not take long for him and Halevy to go head-to-head on major issues and despite meeting with one another on several occasions, their differences were not resolved. IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-General Gadi Eizenkott reportedly was involved at one point too, but he too did not succeed in mending fences between the two top intelligence officials.
At IDF Intelligence, following Ben-Meir’s resignation, they are signaling business as usual but in Ben-Meir’s Facebook postings, he hints that this is far from accurate, obviously unable to detain due to the sensitivity and nature of the persons involved and their professional responsibilities.
