J Root radio is a 100% illegal radio station creating an unprecedented chillul hashem. They are operating on the radio without any license by the FCC whatsoever. They have been raided by the FCC at least once, maybe twice.

Why leading rabbonim such as Rabbi Moshe Tuvia Lief, Rabbi Reisman and many many others allow their Shiurim to be played there is beyond human comprehension.

    It is a 100% mitzvah haba’ah b’aveira! Chazer fisel!

These rabbonim must be aware of the psak that rav Chaim Kanievskey made; If one parks in a handicapped parking space and runs into a shul and davens Shacharis he MUST DAVEN AGAIN! Imagine what a mitzvah haba’ah biaveira this station is. Broadcasting over stations that pay tens of thousands of dollars a MONTH to the FCC and the station owners in fees. And some jew comes along and cuts out their listeners by illegal broadcasting. Simply disgusting.

What ever happened to dina d’malchusa dina? Why are people encouraging illeagle behavior? Can anyone give a valid answer? Because some Breslov sefardi baal teshuva (whom I wish only the best for) decides that since in Israel everyone has pirated radio stations – then we must be allowed to have one in Brooklyn also illegally?!

SHUT THEM DOWN NOW. FOLLOW THE LAW! DO WE NEED MORE JEWS IN NEWSPAPERS/!?!?!?!?!?

What I really don’t understand is why frum Jews listen to the radio at all. It’s archaic.

It can’t be that one who parks in a handicapped space and then davens must daven again, because that would be incredibly unfair to the disabled.

FERD: (what an appropriate screen name)

Your vehemence against J Root makes e suspect you have some other issue with J Root other than your personal tremendous dikduk in Dina D’Malchusa.

Most foreign language radio stations you hear in NYC are pirate stations. While hat doesn’t make it right lets not pretend that Jews are the only one to have pirate stations. Usually the FCC
only takes action against pirate stations if legitimate stations complain they they are interfering with our radio waves

Dear Rabbi Ferd, are you always careful to wear a seat belt at all times?! (its the law buckle up!)
Before you criticize others make sure you have worked on yourself first.
I cant believe that Mr. Ferd`s post was not edited 🙁

The law doesn’t say that you have to wear a seatbelt at all times. Right now I am not wearing a seatbelt and I am not violating the law.

Having a pirate radio station is the most pointless way to break the law. Jroot streaming is as good as Jroot radio.

Even if this is the only mitzvah that FERD cares about it doesn’t mean that it is a Kosher thing to do. It is a Chilul Hashem in my opinion if the facts are true

Ignore Ferd’s stupidity. JROOT is not a pirate radio station, nor was it on or off the air. Jroot is a website – Jrootradio.com. It is available on the Web, from their phone app, and through other Jewish Streaming apps such as Jstream. The broadcast does not ever mention any radio station.

Sometime in the past they were also broadcasting on a radio station, and did advertise it as such (hence the origin of their website address), but that was stopped by the FCC. (Not that I CHAS VESHOLOM mean in any way to agree with or confirm anything FERD said.)

Some anonymous person unrelated to Jrootradio.com has been receiving the free stream over the internet, just like everyone else, and then using their own personal equipment to re-broadcast it over the radio waves as a favor to the local community in flatbush (Brooklyn, NY.) No, this has nothing to do with the Rabbonim. There is no reason at all for any Rabbonim to exclude their content from being shared with Klal Yisroel.

Whether this is legal or not has no bearing on Jroot. The same person (or anyone else) could choose to broadcast any other content in a similar fashion.

As to why this is beneficial – there are still some frum people in this world who do not have smart phones and internet-connected computers in their homes, or at least in their kitchens when they are cooking for shabbos. But they do have radios. Once upon a time radios were very cheap and easy to obtain, and if they have a stereo system CD player, or Tape player, it probably has a radio too. Even simple MP3 players (Sansa clip for example) have radios. So with the broadcast they can listen to shiurim or Jewish music in their homes.

I am just trying to explain the facts, defend the Jrootradio people and distance them from any suspicion of wrongdoing. It is not my intention to take sides on the legality of the broadcast.

Why is YWN allowing anonymous posting? It is a very bad idea that they stopped long ago. Apparently the new website is allowing it again by mistake?

Anyway, an anonymous poster above provided the source for FERD’s statement that “These rabbonim must be aware of the psak that rav Chaim Kanievskey made; If one parks in a handicapped parking space and runs into a shul and davens Shacharis he MUST DAVEN AGAIN! ”

The actual quote said “Such a person, who steals a parking space in order to daven must recite a תפילה נדבה in place of his first tefilla”.

IMHO, that is not quite the same as saying he MUST DAVEN AGAIN.

to follow up in yitzyk… this is why anyone who has ever listened to a baseball game on the radio has heard at some point during the broadcast the following -“Any rebroadcast, retransmission, or account of this game, without the express written consent of Major League Baseball, is prohibited.”

    #1264239
    yitzyk
    Participant

There is no correlation. The baseball games are syndicated and make money by selling the rights to broadcast it. When they say prohibited, they don’t mean by the FCC, but by copyright laws.

Jroot does not need to prohibit people from re-broadcasting because their goals are to provide free Jewish content to the public. They are not being hurt financially when you get their broadcast through other means besides their website or phone app.

The ‘stupid’ comment was not solely because he believes that they are a pirate radio station, but because of the overall tone and content of his comment.

As for the ‘hard sell’, I did not make any of this up. My son volunteers for Jroot occasionally doing some technical computer stuff, and has been to their studios many times. The radio broadcast is certainly not physically being done from their studio. No one there ever mentions the radio broadcast, or even admits to knowing who is doing it. Whether or not any of them know who, how, or from where it is being broadcast, they have purposely distanced themselves from that aspect, specifically in order to be totally legal.

You don’t have to ‘buy it’, but you also can’t go accusing Rabbonim of sponsoring piracy or other illegal activity. Certainly not without proof, and possibly not even WITH proof. If you are really so altruistic about legality, you probably can get some documentation from jroot proving that they ARE legal.

Let those who are being hurt by the broadcast take the broadcaster to bais din / court / proper authorities, while we mind our own business.

BTW – I wonder what R’ Chaim Kanievsky would say about the tefillos of a Baal Loshon Horaah, Motzi Shem Rah, or pretty much any poster on any internet message board. Would Ferd be so quick to quote THAT halacha?

Also, I don’t mean any personal animosity towards Ferd or anyone else. I am just providing another opinion from the opposite side for people to consider. My comments are solely in response to the comments here and their precise wording, not to the people writing them.

“Any rebroadcast, retransmission, or account of this comment, without the express written consent of Major League Baseball, is permitted.”

    This is not totally true.

I assume JRoot makes money from advertisers. The advertisers pay them based on the number of listeners they have. When they calculate that number, they can’t include the people who receive it through other sources.

“Let those who are being hurt by the broadcast take the broadcaster to bais din / court / proper authorities, while we mind our own business.”

I would rather prevent chillul hashem. There are enough Jews in the newspapers getting arrested. “Rabbi Nissim” would look really bad on the front page of every newspaper with his mega long peyos and beard.

“If you are really so altruistic about legality, you probably can get some documentation from Jroot proving that they ARE legal.”

I just called the FCC to confirm. You can too Phone: 1-888-225-5322. In fact, there is no one licensed on 94.1 in the entire NYC.

You should get your son something legal to do for a hobby. Not some shady loopholes in a clearly illegal operation.

Your even worse then Ferd in his earlier comments.

thie people defending jroot are out of their minds.

i listen to them all day, but dont start with the garbage that jroot doesnt know that someone is broadcasting them on the radio.

    what liars!!!!!!!!!!

when they pulled off 95.1 they had a robocall from DJ Yehuda telling everyone that “jroot radio is still available on the hotline and also on their website” – as if to let everyone know that they are “still” on the air but not their radio station.

    why the pack of lies?

i listen to them, but please stop defending this israeli mentality behavior of law-breaking on the radio raves.

Law breaking is law breaking. I’m sure when the last Yarmulke-wearing folks were arrested and in the news, you were appalled. Why this is somehow different I can’t figure out.

    #1264312

Why would Yitzyk ‘get his son a new hobby’? I would imagine if he is old enough to do ‘technical computer stuff’, he is old enough to get himself a new hobby.

“They are not being hurt financially ”

It wasnt my intent to claim they were. In fact, they are probably helped by the fact that someone is retransmitting their broadcasts. What I meant, and should have spelled out clearly was, the point of such a disclaimer (besides for legal mumble jumble that is attached to just about anything these days) is because anyone with the proper equipment can retransmit anything.

Those bashing jroot. why? go to the fcc if they bug you so much. badmouthing them here probably involves way more issurim than ratting them out to the fcc.

APY, ratting them out to the FCC is way worse than badmouthing them. Ratting them is mesira, which a person could be killed for (to stop him) whereas badmouthing is a l”h/ms”r issue.

Personally. I think this is an issue of “zeh nehne vzeh lo chaser” and those like ferd who are yelling from the rooftops and look like they are about to blow a gasket, should take it easy. In the case of 95.1, a legitimate broadcast license holder on that frequency, that is no longer “lo chaser” and the owner of the licence for that frequency had every right to complain to the fcc. 94.1 is currently not licensed to anyone (in the area of their broadcast) so leave it be.
