Beginning on July 5, 2017, unarmed IDF soldiers will be required to carry pepper spray in line with new regulations for both male and female soldiers. Regarding officers; the new regulation applies to lieutenants and captains only, and not more senior officers.
The distribution of pepper spray began in January 2017, with each new recruit receiving one at the time of induction. The various units will distribute the pepper spray to the forces in the field no later than July 1, 2017.
Officials feel this will provide soldiers a self-defense tool in the event they are not carrying a weapon.

Uch un vei if anyone will actually use pepper spray on Arab terrorists.
By the way, the photo on this article is very misleading. An IDF picture mixed men with women makes more sense.
