Egyptian officials have announced that Cairo is unilaterally canceling its natural gas deal with Israel, an announcement that was not well received back in Jerusalem. The Egyptian EGAS Company released the message on Sunday without providing an explanation.
The 20-year agreement between the countries was signed in 2005 as part of the comprehensive peace agreement between Cairo and Jerusalem.
The pipeline has been targeted by terrorists at least a dozen times since the fall of the government of President Hosni Mubarak, apparently a significant contributory factor.
Officials in Israel seem unwilling to accept the declaration as a fait accompli, signaling they may take Egypt to an international court in the hope of compelling EGAS to honor the agreement, which officials in Jerusalem state is a part and parcel of the peace treaty between the countries.
