The MegaMillions jackpot winners from Illinois were revealed Wednesday morning as a long-married couple now have more than $218 million to make their retirement cushy.
Merle and Patricia Butler, lifetime residents of the southern Illinois community of Red Bud, population 3,700, met a crowded room of journalists at the local Village Hall.
Merle, 65, a retired computer analyst, recalled checking his lottery ticket numbers after the drawing.
“The further I went, the more they matched,” he said.
He said his wife, 62, giggled for about four hours after they realized they’d won.
The Butlers will likely be the only winners from the record March 31 drawing to reveal their identity, as required by Illinois law. The other winners, in Kansas and Maryland, weren’t required to make their identities public — and they didn’t.
