Firefighters are dealing with a pair of brush fires burning on Staten Island. Heavy smoke can be seen coming from the Travis section and a smaller fire is burning in Great Kills.
A three-alarm fire is burning at the Victory Boulevard exit of the West Shore Expressway in the Travis section.
The smoke is wafting across the West Shore Expressway, and reports state that the northbound direction of the highway are closed, and OEM reports that there are heavy traffic delays.
Officials are also battling pockets of brush fire in Gateway Park in Great Kills, near Grayson Street.
UPDATE 1:05PM EST:The FDNY has just called for a 4th Alarm to be transmitted. FDNY is reporting that a positive water source has been established from the marine units and satellite units. A very large area of brush burning, and small pockets of fire have jumped the highway and been extinguished. There is a heavy smoke condition over the West Shore Expwy, and the entire highway has been closed in both directions.
UPDATE 1:58PM EST: The fire started as a mulch fire and spread in both directions and temporarily jumped over the West Shore Expressway. There are no reported evacuations to the area, no hotels and residents are in immediate danger from the fire.
DSNY is in the process of moving equipment that is in potential danger.
The command post is located behind the DSNY transfer station by the train cars.
NYPD HIGHWAY 5 CO is reporting that both directions on the West Shore Expwy are open. 5 MPH speed limit being observed due to the smoke condition.
