What options exist for a filter / app lock / parental controls that has no monthly recurring fees for an Android device?

None. The kids can get around any filter with ease. Your best option is a dumb phone…

Joseph are you asking for Israel or the states? I started a thread a while back asking for a replacement for the K9 filter (they don’t work on the latest version of android and I have the feeling they won’t be updating it anytime soon). Somebody in the CR recommended Mobicip which was a very comparable alternative. They have a filtered browser and you can block certain apps (including the appstore itself so that you can’t download new apps without the password).

The filtered browser isn’t perfect (you can still access things like google image search although I think it’s forced safesearch) but it’s definitely better than no filter at all. The app is free although to do anything more than the stuff I just listed I think you need a paid version.

If you’re asking for Israel I got a mushgach phone which I found out about recently. Basically it takes two sim cards – one kosher and one not so you have two phone numbers you can use. The phone is a smartphone and you have internet access on the non-kosher SIM but there is no internet browser, youtube, etc. There is just basic parve apps like email and weather. At the place I got mine from the guy can add on certain other apps like waze and whatsapp. As long as you don’t need to check any websites it’s great option as you don’t need to worry about any chinks in the armor of the filter since there’s no browser. It’s great for an adult, however if you’re looking for a child it’s probably more than they need.

United States. But why couldn’t that Israeli device work outside Israel?

Netspark. a 1 time fee of $55 (I believe). TAG installed it for me and locked all apps except those I specifically asked to keep open. My personal feeling. You get what you pay for. If filtered phone is important, then get something that meets the need.

You can try looking at Norton Family. There is a free version. Its not perfect but it is pretty decent.

Omnipure has great filters. The CL series hooks up to an android device very easily with duct tape, and provides crystal clear drinking water while on the go.

Misteryudi, I find that it is also important that the filter not severely limit the device’s functionality.

you may want to look in to k9 if you want to set up a white list which can be done at no cost, but i am not sure if there filtering service is any good at all or if there is a cost.

K9 is sheker. It involves zero dogs.

    It involves zero dogs.

That is not true. You can set it to bark like a dog if you try to access a blocked site.

There must be an actual dog inside the computer barking. Otherwise, what’s the point?

I’ve used OpenDNS on my android. But fit that I had to root the phone, get a DNS forwarder, and a dynamic IP update app to send OpenDNS my current IP address.

For some reason, though, my phone wouldn’t connect while on Optimum’s Wi-Fi. They block DNS servers. I contacted them, but they seem to be oblivious about it.

HaLeiVi, how can OpenDNS accomplish the OP’s goals?

    Also, your wireless IP changes.

And why do you need Optimum’s WiFi altogether?

    “The cost is annual.”

    OK, so its annual.

    “OK, so its annual.”

The entire basis of this conversation is to find a filter with *no* recurring fees.

    It is a free filter

    Also, your wireless IP changes.

Hence the necessity of the dynamic IP updater app.

And why do you need Optimum’s WiFi altogether?

That’s also free. Otherwise, I had to look at data usage. Besides, many apps run better or backup while using Wi-Fi only. I’m sure these can be changed but again, that would ramp up data usage.

Are OpenDNS’ filter categories and site lists appropriate?

Its usage is much like k9.
