Jackson Township NJ Approves Ban On Dormitories Seen As Direct Target Of Orthodox Jews Moving Into Town

The following is via TLS:

The Jackson Township approved the ban on dormitories throughout the Township on Thursday evening.

Last month, the Township pulled the proposal from the agenda when a large crowd showed up to oppose the ordinance.

The meeting this evening also attracted a large crowd.

The unanimous approval of the ordinance comes despite the fact that many saw this as a direct target of Orthodox Jews moving into the town, and an effort to further deter the growth of Jewish residents within the township. The town of Jackson borders with Lakewood, and hundreds of families have already moved into the neighboring tows of Jackson and Toms RIver.

The ordinance bans dormitories anywhere in the Township – including residential, commercial and industrial zones.

Agudath Israel of America’s New Jersey Director Rabbi Avi Schnall was extremely unhappy about the vote.

“Tonight’s vote was a severe setback in the relationship between a growing portion of Jackson residents and the town Council,” Rabbi Schnall told TLS. “Over the past few weeks, hundreds of emails were sent to the council members asking to have a conversation, all these requests were ignored. It’s a very sad day for Jackson and for religious liberties.”

  1. Guess they don’t want to turn into Lakewood or monsey
This isn’t about frum hidden moving in it’s about destroying an urban inviironment

  2. It’s actually very simple. The Jackson residents don’t want their quite town to turn into the new congested Lakewoood.

  3. Congestion in residential areas could be avoided by zoning dormitories into industrial or commercial zones. This is about keeping the Jews out.

  4. FULLY AGREE WITH COMMENT #3.
IF THIS MOVE WERE NOT REALLY ANTI SEMITISM , THEN DORMS WOULD BE ALLOWED ONLY IN COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL AREAS. SUCH A MOVE WOULD LEAVE THE RESIDENTIAL AREA WITH ITS “RURAL” FLAVOR… WHY ARE LARGE WAREHOUSES AND COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS NOT ALSO BANNED , AS THEY ALSO TAKE AWAY THE “RURAL” FLAVOR FROM THE AREA?? THEREFORE IT IS PERFECTLY OBVIOUYS THAT THIS VOTE IS A PURELY ANTI SEMITIC ONE , DESPITE THEIR CLAIMS OTHERWISE…

  5. When the majority of the township is Jews and Jews sit on the council, then those anti-Semites will complain that the Jews aren’t taking their needs into consideration. What goes around will come around.
