Tel Aviv City Hall and Chametz on Pesach

Tel Aviv Councilman (Shas) Rav Binyamin Bivayoff has sent a letter to Mayor Ron Huldai ahead of Pesach in which he calls for equal enforcement of the law, referring to the city’s practice of turning a blind eye when stores violate laws pertaining to Halacha, such as operating on Shabbos and selling chametz on Pesach.

In this letter the councilman makes reference to the legal obligation shouldered by city hall to make certain the law banning chametz during the yomtov is enforced as the city enforces other laws.

HaMevaser reports that Bivayoff tells the mayor that the city simply turns its back on Jewish tradition and all that is holy to the Jewish People, and this policy is unacceptable.

The Shas councilman also attacks the anti-religious parties in the city council that have launched Shabbos bus service in the city, once again while the mayor turns a blind eye. Bivayoff decries the deteriorating ‘religious status quo’ in the city, and calls upon Mayor Huldai to begin fulfilling his responsibilities under the law and end his policy of selective blindness when it suits his personal lifestyle.
