Bird Lovers To Hold Rally Opposing Simcha Felder’s Proposed $1,000 Fine For Feeding Pigeons

fp1.jpgThe New York Bird Club and animal rights groups will hold a press conference and demonstration outside the steps of City Hall on November 30th from noon to 1 pm in opposition to Councilman Simcha Felder proposal to issue a fine of $1,000 to anyone caught feeding a pigeon – reported HERE on YW.

The New York Bird Club feels the proposal is frivolous, inaccurate and lacking in merit, and is it coincidence that the proposal emerges at a time when there is new construction of high rise apartment buildings almost everywhere in Manhattan.

Councilman Felder has responded to the outcry of pigeon advocates by saying that those who like pigeons should take them into our homes. IThe New York Bird Club suggest the Councilman read up on NYC law since it is against the law to bring a pigeon into your dwelling, and pigeons are feral wildlife and should be treated as such.

The repercussions of taking away New Yorkers’ right to feed a bird should they choose to do so, is that other inhumane and meaningless legislation may follow, designed only to generate income for the City without regard to its wildlife, nature or it’s people. The proposed plan is senseless and cruel, and the people respectfully ask that it not be permitted to pass into our law.

  1. Let all those bird lovers walk under the 18th Ave, McDonald Ave tracks, on a daily basis and then we’ll talk. This has become a menace to society. Kudos to Simcha Felder, please keep the fight on…..

  2. No Comment. I’m speechless on the brains behind this proposal. He must be a genius with a lot of time on hand. I thought so until this morning.

However I had a change of heart. This morning I went to my car, it was full of droppings… from the birds on the tree. So, Mr. Felder, You get my vote. (Does he represent the Large Tree on 12 & cr. 56th St.? that’s the one, I’m talking about. It’s a bad one; a lot of birds reside on that one tree).

Also, how about a FREE CAR WASH PROGRAM paid for by the City for all cars affected by this law that’s overdue 12 yrs (that’s when I got my first car). Have we had this program back then, the hardship (of paying for car washers) would not have been so bad.

  3. YBbp,
call 311 and lobby for such a program. You never know, theyre even giving money to inner city kids to take mandatory tests.

  4. There is nothing like feeding birds. For all those who went to England and visited Trefalger square there is nothing more enjoyable then having birds land on you!

  5. Judiasm ‘s thought on feeding birds:
Rabbi Haim Palagi writes (in segula lehayim) that it is a segula for G-d to have mercy on U if you have mercy on the birds.
Aruch Hashulhan writes you can even feed birds on Shabbat, since the pasuk states verachamav al kol maasav.
    Let the feast begin!!

  6. I think we may be missing the point here. This debate is not about whether or not we personally like pigeons. It is about big intrusive government versus the individual freedom to interact with our natural environment.

And yes, the amount of the proposed fine is out of line. Is pigeon feeding really worse than any parking violation and and most speeding violations and as bad as driving drunk?

  7. # 7 You probably have not been to London recently. Trafalger SQ gave up its birds long ago and its now ileagal to feed a bird there.

  8. Much ado about nothing. There will always be pigeons even if no one feeds them. Maybe they won’t hang out near our homes if they are discouraged by not being fed, but, they won’t go away completely.

  9. #8:
R’ Gad Erlanger records that one who is born on Yom Chamishi will do kindness with others since the fish and BIRDS were created on that day, AND THEY ARE NOURISHED SOLELY BY THE KINDNESS OF G-D.
