Official: NYPD Aware Of ‘Pre-Op’ Surveillance At City Landmarks

While there are no specific threats indicating Iran has plans to attack the U.S., city law enforcement officials say they are aware of the possibility. A New York City Police Department official on Wednesday told the House Homeland Security Committee that investigators have interviewed 13 people since 2005 with ties to Iran’s government who were spotted taking pictures of city landmarks.

Police call the activity “pre-operational” surveillance.

The people were not charged and were eventually released.

However, Mitchell Silber, the NYPD’s director of intelligence analysis, testified the department is concerned Iran or Hezbollah may strike in the city if tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalate.
