France’s prime minister urged Muslims and Jews to consider scrapping their halal and kosher slaughter laws on Monday as President Nicolas Sarkozy and his allies stepped up their efforts to woo far-right voters.
Prime Minister Francois Fillon made the suggestion after Sarkozy called at the weekend for butchers to clearly label meat slaughtered according to religious laws and his allies warned immigrants might impose halal meat on French schoolchildren.
Fillon and other conservative leaders linked this tough stand on ritually prepared meat to issues such as immigration and French identity that the far-right National Front uses to tap into resentment against Europe’s largest Muslim minority.
“Religions should think about keeping traditions that don’t have much in common with today’s state of science, technology and health problems,” Fillon told Europe 1 radio while discussing the two-round presidential election ending May 6.
The “ancestral traditions” of ritual slaughter were justified for hygienic reasons in the past but were now outdated, he said. “We live in a modern society.”
Mohammad Moussaoui, head of France’s Muslim Council, said ritual slaughter was no more painful than modern methods and labeling meat as being prepared “without stunning” would feed resentment against the two minority religions using it.
“It will stigmatize Muslims and Jews as people who don’t respect the interests of animals,” he said. “That will raise tensions in society.”

This guy is toast!!! B’chol dor v’dor omdim a’layni l’chalosaynu.
Perhaps an appropriate response from in the United States (with its “exceptional” tradition of “Freedom OF religion” and religious diversity), would be to ask all the “people of faith” to boycott countries that ban kosher/hallal. Contrary to many politicians, not to mention the zionists, the real issue in the 21st century is the kulturkampf between those who believe in a creator, and those who don’t, and this might be a good time to make a stand.
Highlights the impotance of both the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious expression and “church/state” separation as we know it in the United States. Also is an intewresting case in which Muslims and Yidden need to stand together. Alas, all this in an anethma to many of you on this site.
France has always had a reputation for degenerate lowlife behavior. It continues to be a major source for for the immoral fashions and atheist ideas.
It might be worthwhile for France’s Jews and Moslems to produce a video to show what stunning animals looks like.
THEN, having meat labelled as “Prepared Without Stunning” would become in the eyes of the public, a positive thing instead of a negative one.
I personally think that think French is rather outdated. He should get with the times.
The fear is of Muslims. We are collateral damage because we have no spokespeople who stand up and explain that we have nothing at all in common with Muslims even if they took our method of slaughter and used it for their disgusting creed of death.
We need to make it clear that we have no interest in imposing our culture on anyone, unlike the Muslims who want to have halal in every public cafeteria. Kosher slaughter amounts to nothing in Europe compared to halal, and if we got smart we could have an exemption that would lock them out of the market and send them packing back to where they came from.
Curbing Islam is in our best interest, and we need to make sure we are not seen in the same light as the Muslims are.
Akuperm: Sheker ain lo raglayim If we should make a “stand” let it be for shechita not halal slaughter, which is alot more difficult to defend vis animal pain, i believe.
First of all, someone should inform that ignoramus that Kosher slaughter has nothing to do with hygiene.
Secondly, before he starts to talk about us moving away from our traditions, I think he (along with his nation) should move away from their’s. France is “world famous” for their “tradition” of being snotty, stuck up, and rude! Apparently, that tradition is a Yihareg V’lo Yaavor!
🙂
Hmm. And here I thought religious intollerance was outdated.
It’s no good leaving your comments on this site, we’re all in agreement here. Make your protests known to the French Prime minister that he is ignorant of the science which clearly shows that shechita conforms to all the principles of humaneness, compassion and hygeine. The Torah is never “outdated”. His suggestion to end shechita is a gross insult to Jews and a carbon copy of Hitlers anti shechita law in 1939.Is France following in the footsteps of the Nazis who destroyed France in WW2?
