Some hospitals in the city are not getting a clean bill of health in a scathing new report about patient safety. Consumer Reports ranked more than a thousand of the nation’s 4,000 hospitals based on the number of hospital-acquired infections, re-admissions within 30 days and the quality of discharge and medication instructions.
Thirty of the 50 lowest rated hospitals were in the New York City metropolitan area.
Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx was rated the worst in the country for patient safety.
Other local hospitals rated poorly are Forest Hills Hospital in Queens, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, Kings County Hospital Center and Jamaica Hospital.
In a statement, Jacobi Hospital says the report is misleading, adding, “It does not include more recent hospital data that shows significant improvements in hospital acquired infections, readmissions and communication with our patients who speak over 150 languages.”
A spokesperson for Forest Hills Hospital also weighed in on infections at the hospital, saying, “In the past two years (2010-2011), those numbers have shown significant, steady improvement — to the point that the hospital’s performance is now better than the state average.”
The Greater New York Hospital Association also suggests the data is misleading.

Have any hospitals in the NYC area been shown to be at the top of the list, or is that not newsworthy.
