Golani Commander: I Don’t Select Subordinates Based on What is on Their Heads

Speaking to students ahead of their induction into the IDF, Golani Brigade commander Colonel Ofir Buchris spoke of the growing number of religious officers emerging from the ranks of Golani. “It is important for quality religious soldiers to continue towards becoming officers. I am looking for quality people and such people should continue on to officers’ training regardless of their belief”. The colonel made his remarks in an address Wednesday morning, 29 Shevat, to students from the HaGolan Bnei Akiva Yeshiva ahead of their enlistment into the IDF this summer.

Buchris recently was quoted as expressing concern over the large number of frum soldiers and officers in Golani, leading to the military arranging for secular kibbutznikim to enlist into the combat brigade to dilute the religious influence.

Nevertheless, the Kippa website reports Colonel Buchris address the Bnei Akiva students and encouraged them to continue to become officers. He also told them that when they enter the military, they must realize their mora d’asra is Chief Rabbi Brigadier-General Rafi Peretz, and this realization will avoid difficulties during their service.
