I prefer to put up the succah during the day as its much easier to see everything (even with lights) If for example you drop a screw, its pretty hard to find it at night, but during the day its usually pretty simple.
Most people around me usually put it up the Sunday before Succoth or the Sunday before Yom Kippur (like this year).. So most Succas were already up before Yom Kippur
