HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita, a son-in-law of Maran Posek HaDor HaGaon HaRav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita, has called on the tzibur to accept a taanis on Thursday, 23 Shevat 5772 on behalf of the posek hador.
Rav Kanievsky has stipulated however that this is only for those capable of doing so without negatively impacting one’s learning, for fasting at the expense of compromised Torah study will not have accomplished its goal.
Doctors at Shaare Zedek Medical Center today, 22 Shevat, will attempt to extubate the gadol hador and replace the endotracheal tube providing his airway with a tracheotomy, a relatively minor surgical procedure by which an incision is made in one’s throat, entering one’s trachea and bypassing one’s mouth. Obviously, on a 101-year-old patient, no procedure is minor.
While this was attempted earlier in the week, albeit without success, reports from the hospital signal today the physicians feel the move is critical for the rav’s continued treatment.
The tzibur is requested to continue being mispallel for Rav Yosef Sholom ben Chaya Musha b’soch kol cholei am yisrael.

What do I do if I am already fasting tomorrow for Shovavim? Also what about the Kabalah for the fast at the end of Shmona Esrei? Do I have to have kavana for both? Can I have kavana for both and fast for both?
it might be a small procedure but sadly this means he will not be able to talk now, should he feel strong enough to do so…
First off, the rav should have a complete refuah.
Secondly, I admired that the article articulated that only one whom will not see a decrease in quality or quantity of his learning should fast. Therefore, the vast majority shouldn’t fast in my opinion, perhaps only till chatzos.
I just spoke to the Agudath Yisroel of America office & they told me that they got no letters from Eretz Yisroel telling them to make a Taanis here is the U.S. so as of now unless the Aguda gets a letter later in the Day the Taanis is just for Eretz Yisroel. The Aguda is aware of what Rav Kanievsky said but will not make a Taanis unless told by Eretz Yisroel of Rav Kanievsky’s people to do so.
#4- Why would you call the Agudah for? Are they the official “Taanis makers”? Who exactly? Gedalia Weinberger? Shmuel Lefkowitz? Or is it Eli Kleinman and Werdeger?

To Ferd says
Yes they are the official Taanis Makers as the Moetzes Gedolei America is part of the Agudah.(For example Rav Dovid Feinstein, Rav Yakov Perlow & Rav Aaron Schechter among others are on the Moetzes.) No I did not speak to the people you mentioned I spoke to Rabbi Laibish Beckers secretary who put me on hold & asked someone.
