Update on Bomb Attack Outside New Delhi Mission [UPDATED 16:40 IL]

At present, while it is assumed to be the case, security and intelligence officials are not absolutely certain that there is a connection between the car bomb attack at the Israeli mission in New Delhi and the bomb found at the diplomatic mission in Georgia. It is relevant that the date coincides with the assassination of senior Hizbullah leader Imad Mughniyeh, which Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah blames on Israel.

In New Delhi, the bomb exploded on Monday morning local time, apparently when the wife of a member of the Israeli diplomatic team was in the vehicle. She was injured and transported to a local hospital. There are conflicting reports regarding the extent of her injuries, listing them as “light-to-moderate” or “moderate-to-serious”. Local police only report that the vehicle exploded into flames in front of the embassy and two people were injured. The local media however is reporting 5-8 causalities.

The media in New Delhi is reporting that eyewitnesses reported seeing two persons on a motorcycle approach the vehicle and then throwing the bomb at it.

In Georgia, a bomb was discovered by an employee in the diplomatic complex. In this case the bomb was attached to the front underside of a vehicle belonging to an embassy employee. That device was neutralized without injuries.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman released a statement that Israel is not about to sit by and take the blows without responding, adding Israel is capable of identifying those responsible. He added that it is a known fact that Israelis and state officials are a target for terrorists at home and abroad.

UPDATE 15:05 IL: Israeli officials are reporting there are two injured in the New Delhi attack, including one Israeli. It is also being reported that diplomatic officials abroad have received new instructions pertaining to driving in vehicles in cities.

UPDATE 16:40 IL: Tal Yehoshua Koren, the wife of the Defense Ministry attaché to New Delhi who was injured in the Tuesday morning (20 Shevat 5772) terror attack against the Israeli Embassy is now in surgery in a local hospital.

Family members in Israel are preparing for a flight to India to be at her side.

Her condition is being reported as “light-to-moderate”.
