Councilmember Bill de Blasio, union leaders and theatre management worked late into Sunday night to make sure that the annual Ohel fundraiser would go on. The Ohel fundraiser, which was scheduled for Monday night at the Marriott Marquis Theatre was about to be cancelled because of the Broadway stagehand strike. Immediately after Councilmember de Blasio became aware that their event was in jeopardy he connected with all the relevant parties to help broker a deal to temporarily suspend the picket line and allow the event to go on. What would have been a devastating loss turned into a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together to help all those who benefit from the services that Ohel provides.
Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services was established in 1969 to provide homes and families for abandoned, neglected, abused and disabled Jewish children. Ohel’s seven core services, which encompass all of its 26 programs, are housing, foster care, outpatient counseling, at-home services, school-based programs, camps, and abuse services.
Councilmember de Blasio said: “I am extremely proud that I was able to help ensure that Ohel’s Benefit Concert could go on. Ohel is a tremendous organization which helps some of our City’s most vulnerable children. As chair of the General Welfare committee I understand all too well that without these types of organizations many children would be left to suffer. Their fundraising drive, which I was honored to be a part of, enables Ohel to offer important social services and programs to the community.”
Ohel has been consistently ranked as the number #1 Foster Care agency by the NYC Administration for Children Services.
Additionally, Yeshivaworld has been told that the union workers did not charge a Penny for working – after being told what Ohel is all about!!

B”H what a great story, and what a great organization. Thanks for reporting it YW.
Kudos to Councilman de Blasio
Good to hear someone in the council is doing good work, instead of worrying about pigeons.
Maybe I should move to the other side of BP to be in De Blasio’s district…
