Mayor Bloomberg slammed Congress Sunday for not providing federal funding to keep guns out of the wrong hands.
Touting a new Super Bowl ad against illegal guns, the mayor said states don’t get enough money to perform proper background checks on gun applicants.
“Federal laws say you can’t get a gun if you have a drug problem, psychiatric problem, criminal record or [are a\] minor, and yet Congress doesn’t give monies to make sure that we can have a background check,” Bloomberg said on “Meet the Press.”
Criminals seeking guns can take advantage of “too many loopholes,” the mayor said.
“The background database isn’t up to date, private sector sales of guns is something like 40%, and they don’t do background checks,” he said.
Even with the city’s tough gun laws, a Brooklyn thug with prior arrests allegedly obtained a pistol and shot cop Kevin Brennan in the head last week, he said.
“New York is now so much lower than almost every big city, we still had a cop shot last week with a gun that somebody had, even though the federal laws prohibited that person from having a gun,” the mayor said, referring to accused gunman Luis “Baby” Ortiz.
Bloomberg filmed the Super Bowl ad with his Boston counterpart, Mayor Thomas Menino. In the 30-second clip, the pair, decked out in their respective football team’s gear, debate whose city is better but agree on tougher gun laws.

This just proves that gun control laws do NOT work.
ALL they do is keep guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens who want them for self-defense and/or sport purposes.
What WILL work, they don’t want to do.
That is, when someone is arrested for a violent crime (with or withOUT a gun) lock them up for a LONG time.
These thugs either serve no time or minimal time and are out on the streets again.
LONG SENTENCES is what will stop gun crime, not gun control laws.
Mr. Mayor i know your a communist but what part of shall not be infringed dont you understand? Its really pathetic that this guy prances around talking about gun control when judges in his state allow criminals to walk, and not a word about that he would rather blame an inadament object than blame people for their actions. Mr. bloomberg did a gun kill an nypd officer a few weeks ago or did a convicted felon who you judge let out with out bail!! but i guess recognizing that doesnt advance your agenda does it?
@1: sadly, long sentences don’t deter many of these people and, by the time they do get out, prison has makes them worse.
@2: Bloomberg is many things but not a communist. Also, it wasn’t “his” judge who let him out on bail. The NC warrant did not include out-of-state and the judge is not appointed by the mayor.
The knee-jerk reaction of longer and longer prison jail terms is not an option: the US has one of the highest prison populations already.
Having said that, I’m fed up with the gun control debate. You can’t have a City with one rule while states have others.
Anyone who wants a gun can get it…unless you obey the law.
