The idea that Mashiach will fall from the clouds on horseback as a conquering hero is not a Jewish one. Rambam, in Hilchot Melakhim, makes it clear that the Mashiach and the period of Geulah are things that humanity must prepare themselves for. We have to be zoche the geulah sheleima, through moral and spiritual and social progress. Improvements in ben adam le chavero and taking steps towards creating a more just society are certainly peulot that pave the way for the Messianic era.
