Lakewood Hatzolah Practices Extrication

IMG_2258.jpg(Click HERE for photos) If someone is trapped in vehicle that was involved an accident, minutes may sometimes make the difference in someone’s life. A number of years ago, Lakewood Twp did not have the good daytime coverage that it has today, so Hatzolah of Lakewood began practicing extrication.

To date, many of Lakewood Hatzolah’s members have received extensive training on how to operate heavy rescue equipment properly. With the acquisition of their newest rescue truck, there are many heavy rescue tools on board. The Hurst tool, also known as the “jaws of life” is used to cut open cars. The truck also has “air bags” on it. This could be used to lift a car, if necessary.

To maintain proper operating skills, regular training and practice drills are required.  Hatzolah takes old cars, sometimes having them smashed up or overturned, prior to the drill to simulate a real car accident. Pictures seen here are from a recent full day drill, practicing extrication.

Hatzolah of Lakewood maintains good ties and close relations, with Lakewood EMS, the First Aid Squad, and the fire Dept. They work very well with each other, and call each other for mutual aid when needed.

  1. Very impressive! Extrication is backbreaking work even with the best equipment, not to mention that in some cases it drag on for hours.Alot of training and experience is also necessary because there can be hundreds of situations. Has Lakewood Hatzolah had extrications since theyve started their practice?
