Joseph, actually that is doubly problematic as paying a dayan looks like bribery. Apparently, just as having toenim was allowed in stages because of people who were afraid to sue powerful people or who did not know how to argue for themselves, dayanim were allowed to receive salaries so that people would become dayanim. This is especially true in our day when instead of learning for ten-eleven years (in Israel the average is three for “Yoreh Yoreh” and seven-eight for “Yadin Yadin”) someone can go to law school for less (a total of seven years in the US and three and a half in Israel, where it is a B.A.).
