It is because in today’s world, we are taught to multi-task which means that it is harder to focus on one thing. Reading inside takes more active participation which increases focus and makes you more immersed. Listening is a passive act in which you can be doing other things or spacing out while doing it so you aren’t as focused and immersed.
In the olden days, however, audiobooks were preferred.
