New Jersey officials are ringing in the new year by reaching further into drivers’ wallets.
Hours after the ball drops in Times Square, tolls for travel along the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway will rise a whopping 50 percent — the latest blow to motorists already reeling from bridge and tunnel hikes.
The increases are the long-forgotten second half of a two-phase toll increase adopted by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in October 2008 under then-Gov. Jon Corzine.
Then, turnpike tolls increased 40 percent and parkway tolls rose 43 percent.
This time around, turnpike tolls will go up 53 percent and parkway tolls will rise 50 percent.
The new tolls will take effect at 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.
