Yes, the fact that no one needs to go about in rags proves that the programs are serving the social benefit that was intended. That doesn’t prevent people who don’t get benefits from comparing themselves to those who do (and thus being the thief of joy). What was your question? As to child tax credits, those are in the same category as giving tax exemptions for dependents. The country wants its citizens to have families and offers a financial incentive.
