8:30PM EST: FDNY is on the scene at 22 West 24th Street near Broadway – with a five story building which has just collapsed (pancaked) – possibly a hotel. A 10-60 has been transmitted (“Major Emergency”). NYPD is calling a level 1 response to the scene – and Con-Edison has been requested forthwith. Searches are underway for possible victims trapped.
UPDATE 8:40PM EST: NYC OEM is advising that the building is a vacant hotel, and there are no injuries to report at this time.

This incident reminds me of twenty years ago, when I was teaching in the School of Architecture at the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois. One of my students lent me a novel (fiction) regarding the slow collapse of a skyscraper in Manhattan. Only the occupants of the building were concerned. No one else seemed to know or care. Only in Manhattan!
