Many people busy themselves contemplating just how to make some extra money, and Yated Ne’eman’s Tuesday edition, 18 Cheshvan, hosted such an effort. The ad appeared in the free Tuesday weekly edition, with a family that is expecting a child offering to name it for someone in exchange for payment.
“Interested in naming a baby for a special person for payment, call….”.
When called the person explained that is someone wishes to honor a deceased person, a good person, but has no offspring, he is offering the opportunity in exchange for payment, but added he will not just take money, but will check into the person being honored to make sure it is fitting.
He explained it is a good family, but there are debts that must be paid, nothing more. When asked when the bris is he explained the child hasn’t been born yet.

Does the buyer get to attend the bris?
I am aware of a situation where naming a child was a prerequisite to entitle parents to receive funds from an estate. The parents received the approval of their rebbe (a world class chasidic leader) to accept the funds in return for giving the name.
Its sick out there and getting sicker

People are living in dire poverty-s/o is looking for a creative way to earn a few much needed dollars. Maybe they will name it Git Mishige after you:)
Its a free country, but the people should have done this in a more private manner. The Goyim will mock this. If it hadnt been for money, just looking for a saintly person to name their chil after, it would be different.
Unfortunately, not unusual and very helpful for a family that wants to perpetuate a name and has no available offering.
What’s wrong with an exchange of money for this opportunity?
I think that it is a wonderful thing what the parents are doing. They are in debt. Instead of doing things not so ehrlich to pay their debts they do something completely legit. They said they will check out the person being named after. KOL HAKAVOD!!!!
Yes! I can finally name someone after my alter bubba, Yenta Genendal Zlata. With all the flowers in the world, I just couldnt convince my wife.
Although its a little weird to see this advertised in a paper I don’t think there is anything wrong with what these people are doing. Nothing wrong with being creative in a positive way!
Sometimes it’s not what you say, but how you say it. In this case, I think it’s tacky to put an advertisement in the papers. They should have turned to a Rav or Askin for help to discretely find someone who would be willing to pay them to name their child after his/her relative.
