Wolf: In EY, it’s actually the other way around in many shuls. The kahal davens in the nusach of the baal tefillah. In fact, many shuls have little reversible signs (Ashkenaz/Sefard) so that the baal tefillah can indicate to the kahal which one he will be davening (it’s often worth it to bring two siddurim).
