Americans Leonid Hurwicz, Eric S. Maskin and Roger B. Myerson won the Nobel prize in economics on Monday for developing a theory that helps explain how incentives and private information affect the functioning of markets. Hurwicz, 90, is reportedly the oldest Nobel winner ever.

Do you know they are jews based solely on their names? And what connection do they have to judaism, anyway?
Hey there #1, otherwise know as “oncesmart”. it sounds like you went ‘off’ did you go off due to ideological concerns or intellectual? it sounds like you have a pet peeve that you need to air every so often and you watch this website to do it. nebach. go assuage your guilt somewhere else, please.
If they’re Jews they have a connection to Judaism by being Jewish.
Oncefrum,
It is not anyone’s business to judge their level of frumkeit. It is pretty amazing that at the age of 90 someone is able to receive a nobel prize in economics, kenayna hara! Wow! He should be gezunt un shtark until 120, IY”H. What should have been said is, mazel tov. The fact that their yiddishe kup is still just as strong at 90 as it was in years past, is proof, IMHO, that he IS Jewish.
tatti: Anyone should be entitled to question without being “kicked off” the website. (Probably what turned him off to yiddeshkeit in the first place). If you can’t answer the question, maybe leave it to someone else who can.
1, The connections they have to Judaism is that they are apparantly very clever. Jews are a clever people!
2, who says he was ‘oncesmart’??
Let me add that Eric Maskin is known as one of the finest, most ethical, and most decent people in economics. He is a kiddush haShem regardless of any prizes and regardless of his personal level of observance.
Once: If indeed your name reflects who you are then I ask you to think of being Jewish as one might think of being a member of a royal family. (BTW where did the term JewISH come from? There is no one who is Catholish or Muslish, is there? Buddish? Hinddish?) A member of the royal family is always a member of that family. There is nothing he/she could do to earn the title of “once royalty.” Lev yoday’ah maras nafsho, nonetheless the honor you alone could bring to the Al-mighty is greater than that of the “frumist” (I don’t know the source of that word either) most righteous person. Hang in there. Keep asking and searching. You will, with enough determination, find the answers and with them peace and happiness.
how many articles have we read, including an incredible artice written by a non-jew in a recent issue of Commentary discussing “Jewish Genius” While we could be proud- my question to you bloggers is quite simple- In the history of Nobel prizes, how many frum recipients were there- the answer is one, that is four less than the number of Muslim recipients, certainly not a great statistic
flash: Are you comparing Jewish with a frum orientation to Muslim with any orientation? Hardly an accurate study you’re presenting unless you know the level of relious observance of every Nobel prize recipient. Besides, I would presume that most scientists anyways are not religious, Jew or non-Jew.
IMHO these yidden have an opportunity to make a true Kiddush Hashem by declining the honors.
DECLINE the award that has been given to the likes of Arafat yemach shemoi v’zichroi!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let Peres, Gore and and similar feeble minded recipients be the entire makeup of this once prestigious award.
#10 Even if you’re correct about the number of frum Jewish Nobel Laureates, how many of the Muslims were frum?
Flash,
Clearly you are no threat to win a nobel in math/economics. First off, why should frumkite matter when looking at “Jewish Genius”. Secondly, why is this a competition with the islamic world. Third, your math is fuzzy… If the world has a billion muslims, 5 nobel prizes equals 1 nobel for every 200 million muslims. How many frum jews are there in the world? 1-2 million?
What does my handle have to do with the content of my post?
truth4ruth – your “presumption” that “most” scientists jewish or not jewish arent relgious is based on what? Id like to see your source.

you ask an interesting question.
this is not a forum with rigorously controlled rules of order or debate.
it is a venue of human interaction.
your handle was quite obviously chosen to make a (humanly interactive) statement, a quite provocative statement at that, especially on this forum!
you remind me of the guy in torn jeans with long messy green hair, and a bone in his nose who asks: “why is everybody staring at me, why can’t they just judge me for my inside?”
No, what I meant was, what reason did #2 have for not replying at all to my comment and only mentioning my handle. It is ok to rant about my handle, but at least reply to my legitimate posts.
I visit this site to gain insight into Jewish thinking. I find the exchanges very interesting. I do think pride in the accomplishments of people of like faith would be an important part of that faith.
Responding to # 20. Sometimes, did you ever notice flies swarming around something and bothering you. Ask an exterminator and he will tell you that there is a dead animal, feces.. somewhere around. Well, you have two choices. Either swat at the flies from today till tomorrow, or get rid of the death and filth. Listen, sir, I can answer your question, but whats the use, your agenda will only be completed when you are bored of asking all of the inane questions that you can think of to instigate second guessing amongst ‘still frum” yidden. The filth was created long ago when you decided (I am not blaming you, perhaps you had a tragic childhood, perhaps you were stuck with rebbeim who were not fit to be such, I do not know) the flies are swarming when you and others poke at us and our children (especially our not yet mature children who watch this and other websites against the advise of gedolim) and to your glee, go ‘off’, because of the apikorsis. I should swat at flies? If you want, ask the YW editor for my email address. I give him permission to pass it along to you. If you are interested in cleaning up the filth (the handle) it would be my greatest honor to try and help.
house 77: It is common knowledge that science and religion usually clash. Science is about proof and evidence, whereas religion requires faith. Think-The Big Bang, Evolution, etc… all contrary to every major religion in the world, however, because this is the only explanation that scientists have to creation and mankind, it is accepted and taught in school as truth.
sammygol: The way I see it, if someone is spending time on a frum website and calling him/herself as someone who was “once frum”, he/she still wants to keep a connection. Otherwise, why bother??? Don’t read everything at face value. “Oncefrum” has a lot more going on behind the surface if you/we would only take the time care.

quote: “Science is about proof and evidence, whereas religion requires faith.”
just the opposite!!
science (not technology but the science of the past, as you were referring to)requires unbelievable completely rock hard faith, there is no other way to believe in the absurdity of evolution.
to believe in The Creator, on the other hand, is as clear as opening your eyes, the evidence is everywhere.
Feivel, You and me believe that, but not the majority of scientists. Also, there is always a certain amount of blind faith that is a given b/c not every explanation is known to us or understood by us, but we still believe. A frum scientist (which is very rare) can incorporate both Torah with science. Gerald Schroeder, a nuclear physicist and frum Jew wrote several books incorporating Torah hashkafos with modern day science. One book that he wrote is called “Genesis and the Big Bang Theory”. Believe me, he is a rare breed since most scientists brush it off as “hogwash”
#22 – First, although I am neither confirming nor denying my apikorsis, there is no contradiction in being non-frum and also not being an apikoris. Second, why are you labeling me as a ‘khoite imakhte es harabim’? Poking at your children? Me’ayin?
