Rockland County Power Outages Could Persist For Days

Thousands of Rockland residents are expected to remain without power until the middle of the week after Saturday’s freakish nor’easter.

An estimated 27,214 customers were without power as of 5 p.m. today as dozens of emergency crews continued damage assessment and re-opening roadways blocked by downed trees and wires.

Road conditions vary throughout the area. Traffic moved easily along Interstate 287 while sections of New City, Orangetown and Ramapo — the three hardest hit areas in the county — remain inaccessible because of debris.

Citing the scale of the storm’s damage, Mike Donovan, a spokesperson for Orange and Rockland Utilities Inc., said repairs to the grid were expected to continue through most of the week.

Power could be restored to about 90 percent of O&R customers by midnight Wednesday. The utility expects to have the lights back on for the remaining 10 percent by midnight Friday, Donovan said.

All eight of Rockland County’s school districts have canceled classes tomorrow because of conditions.

Meanwhile, officials are warning residents to stay clear of downed trees and wires.

Customers are encouraged to call O&R’s toll-free number 1-877-434-4100 to report downed wires.

Police and fire departments were swamped by phone calls throughout the day, as officers and firefighters raced to check reports of downed wires.

Hundreds of calls were logged by the county’s Office of Fire and Emergency Services.
