Something similar once happened to me. The wife of a long time kollel guy asked my wife, “Doesn’t it feel horrible to be married to an ama’aretz? Don’t you sometimes wish your husband learned?”. She answered that she’s very proud of her husband who helps out financially. Her husband then commented that it sounded like my wife was in a cult.
