Trial and error.
The purpose of this thread was so that people could experiment until they get their formatting working properly.
I wouldn’t call the backticks a “problem” – they are viewed by the site software as formatting instructions.
Basically, they are used to tell the site software not to interpret anything between them as code. Because of this, spaces are not stripped, code is not translated (which is how I can give formatting tag samples without having them actually format the text, and the font is displayed as fixed width.
The first backtick delimits the beginning, the second one delimits the end.
If there are backticks embedded as part of the art, the special formatting is being turned on and off multiple times, wrecking the picture.
