If history is any indication of what he might say, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is sure to say something controversial when he addresses the United Nations General Assembly Thursday afternoon.
The speech scheduled for 12:30 p.m. will likely include hostile remarks about Israel after Ahmadinejad referred to the Jewish state as a ‘fake regime’ during a recent interview.
The comment could come at a delicate juncture in Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations. Palestinian leaders have said they would push ahead for recognition as a state.
Meanwhile, protests are planned surrounding Ahmadinejad’s visit to New York. The organization–United Against Nuclear Iran– has scheduled a demonstration for 2 p.m. outside the Warwich Hotel (54th St. and 6th Ave.) where President Ahmadinejad is staying. Earlier in the day, a protest will take place at Hammarskjold Plaza at 47th St. and 1st Ave.
