President Obama comes to New York Monday looking to avert a UN showdown over a Palestinian state – and hunting for donations from an increasingly angry base.
Part of Obama’s efforts are aimed at reassuring Jewish voters – many of whom give the President low ratings for his policies on Israel – that the U.S. is doing all it can to block the Palestinian power play.
The pitch comes after Democrats lost a long-held Big Apple congressional seat to a Republican in part over anger about Obama’s Israel policies.
Besides juggling the latest Mideast crisis, Obama also may meet with the chairman of Libya’s governing council, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Turkey’s prime minister before addressing the General Assembly on Wednesday.
The heavy policy lifts will be interspersed with the hunt for reelection cash, which has slowed over the summer amid a bruising deficit battle, high unemployment and the President’s sinking popularity in polls.
The President and First Lady are expected to attend a small dinner fund-raiser tonight at a private residence in Manhattan – with a tab of $35,800 per person.
Michelle Obama will headline a $500-$35,800 lunch at the posh 583 Park Ave. tomorrow to bolster support from Democratic women. Gloria Steinem is among those expected to join the First Lady.
The First Couple are expected to host a dinner tomorrow night at Gotham Hill, with a special performance by Alicia Keys. Tickets are listed from $2,500 to $15,000.

The Democrats wish to believe that Jewish objections to Obama primarily if not exclusively have to do with foreign policy. To regain Jewish support, they believe they only need to do something clearly favorable to Israel, e.g., respond to the UN recognizing the Palestinians as the lawful government of Eretz Yisrael by by selling weapons to Israel of the sort that the US hasn’t been willing to sell in the past, or moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, etc.
I suspect the Democrats don’t want to admit the a larger part of the problem is that given the changed demographics of Jewish communities in areas with a large concentration of Jews, supporting gay rights and abortion is no longer a way to win friends and influence people, and almost no one approves of his economic policies. But we’ll see.
the only thing obama is good at is spending other peoples’ money. he keeps spending the tax papers money like a drunk or a gambling addict or he is raising money to feed his endless campaigns.
