Israel: Preparing For Operation Uman

Israel’s Port Authority and officials at Ben-Gurion International Airport are getting ready for the pre-Rosh Hashanah flights from Tel Aviv to Uman, to the Kever Rabbi Nachman of Breslov ZY”A. Officials report that at present, over 22,000 people are booked to fly to Uman in the four days before Rosh Hashanah, beginning on Sunday, first day of slichos.

This year, even more people are flying from Eretz Yisrael in light of the new reality that one does not require a visa.

Airport officials have held meetings with organizers and representatives of Breslov Chassidus in Israel towards facilitating the process, addressing expedited ticketing, check in, and security inspections. Special areas will be designated to handle yomtov travelers.

Each traveler will be permitted to take food, providing it is packaged in an acceptable fashion, up to 20kg (44LBS), in addition to the carry on with a weight limit of 8kg (17lbs). Realizing that many travelers will be davening in the airport, two halls are being set aside to accommodate minyanim, and airport employers will be assigned to maintain order and assist travelers in finding these halls to keep the minyanim in designated areas.

  1. this is like the emperor’s new clothes. am I the only one who thinks this is utter lunacy that 40,000 people are choosing to spend yom tov in a graveyard? at a grave no one even talked about 30 years ago? away from wives and children? and away from yom tov seudos with family and divrei torah? spending all that money on ukrainians? why is this good

  2. צדיקים במיתתם נקראים חיים. So your description of just another graveyard is not correct. With regard to why people are willing to do this, רבי נחמן promised that he will pull anyone who comes to him for ראש השנה out of גיהנם. With regard to the fact that no one talked about going there for 30 years is nonsense. Thirty years ago there was a Soviet Union and a cold war. Now, there is an opportunity to go there. Now, I personally don’t feel the pull to go there, but there is no reason to belittle those who choose to go.

  3. To# 2 you’re 150% right and its not only that the idea that they’re leaving our homeland the land of Israel the gift that hashem gave us. If I would have the ability to travel for tom tov the first place would be the land of milk&honey I would hug & kiss the stones of our great land and the fact that they exchanging it with what??? With a graveyard ??? How embarrassing this is remember what chazal is teaching us that when the Jews were worshiping idles that the Jews did two wrong things one that they left hashem and the 2nd sin was that they exchanged him with broken wells.and what # 3 was commenting about the gihenum nonsense that has no place in Judaism because if a person don’t commit a sin he ends up in heaven anyway and if a person commits a sin he has to pay for it there’s no way out no rabbi no kugel no tish its all nonsense and lies only real tshuve helps

  4. #2 I definitely have the same question as you. It got me thinking, maybe one of the reasons why so many people go there today compared to 30 years ago, is that today everyone is looking for the Segula, the easy way out, the instant gratification Yiddishkeit, which (as far as I know) doesn’t exist. 30 years ago and before were doros of people who realised that to reach gadlus and proper teshuva etc. it takes a tremendous avodah and not hopping on a plane to visit a grave. Please don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that every single person is like that today, however I think I can safely say that it is an attitude which is (unfortunately) very widespread and prominent amongst people from all walks of life in today’s day and age.

“With regard to why people are willing to do this, רבי נחמן promised that he will pull anyone who comes to him for ראש השנה out of גיהנם”

Im sure that if a person goes to R Nachmans kever and then comes back to EY or USA and does Grubbeh Aveiros theres nobody pulling him out of Gehennom.

Im pretty sure R Nachman meant if the person does SINCERE TESHUVAH and is a changed person and tries his hardest for the rest of his life and still must go to Gehennoim because “Ain Tzaddik Bearetz Asher Yaaseh Tov Velo Yechta” then R Nachman will help him out of Gehinnom. Anyone going thinking its a get out of gehennom free card is HUGELY MISTAKEN!!!
