Swastikas On Passaic Shul

hate crimes6.jpg“Neo-Nazi’s on the rise!!!” was someone’s way to commemorate in Passaic the end Yom Kippur. On Sunday morning, city residents woke to at least three handwritten signs emblazoned with swastikas and anti-Semitic messages hung in different locations in Passaic, police said.

In one of the signs, someone penned “kkk,” “100% Non Kosher” and three swastikas in a sloppy black scrawl on a piece of white paper.

One sign hung from a telephone pole on the corner of Main Avenue and Van Houten Avenue in the heavily Jewish 3rd Ward Park neighborhood. Another was found on a pole five blocks north on Main at Aycrigg Avenue.

The last one was affixed to the door of a Brook Avenue synagogue. Congregants gathering for Shacharis at Young Israel of Passaic-Clifton discovered the signs.

Police cordoned off the synagogue and collected evidence. The prosecutor’s office also responded. Schaer, an orthodox Jew, commended the quick response from authorities.

Several residents witnessed someone hanging the signs, and Police expect to make an arrest shortly, he said.

The individual arrested will face charges of intimidation and bias harassment, which are indictable crimes, Rawls said. He couldn’t remember the last time city police had handled such a serious act of bias.
